What Is Thread Lifting?
Thread lifting is a safe and effective technique which involves placing adsorbable threads under- neath the skin to firstly lift or elevate sagging skin and secondly to regenerate the facial tissues by stimulation the production of collagen in the following months so skin becomes smoother, and tighter and facial features regain their youthful definition.
What Materials Are Used to Achieve This?
Clincally proven Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are used at Bishopsgate dental care. A material that has been used in the medical world for over 15 years. The threads are fully biodegradable and biocompatable with the bodies natural tissues. They have the long term benefit of stimulating the growth of collagen and elastin in the skin.
Who Is Suitable for PDO Thread Lift?
The procedure is suitable for most people from 25 years onwards, when the effects of ageing become apparent. Ageing causes the skin tissue to thin because the collagen and elastin fibres break down, which results in sagging skin, deep creases, folds and wrinkles. PDO threads reverse the effects of ageing and improve the quality of skin.
Contraindications
Please be aware that we will not be able to continue with thread lifting treatment if any of the following apply to you:
- Active Acne or any type of skin infection
- Keloid scarring predisposition
- Autoimmune disease: scleroderma, sarcoidosis, amyloidosis
- Anti-coagulation medication
- Haemophilia
- Pregnancy, IVF
- Malignancy, Chemotherapy
- History of bacterial endocarditis
- Existing systemic infection
- Active cold core ( Herpes simplex virus)

What Does the Treatment Involve?
Before
We would first invite you to a relaxed full facial consultation with Dr Day to assess your concerns and discuss all of the options that are available to you, providing you with all the information for you to make an informed decision. During the consultation we may do some clinical photographs to get a detailed look at your skin texture and tone and the contours of your face, to help us to together form a bespoke treatment plan to address all your needs and concerns.
During
The whole treatment takes around and we will start by cleansing and disinfecting the skin. It is greatly appreciated if you can attend this appointment without make up in the areas to be treat- ed. We will apply numbing creams and local anaesthetic to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. The threads are then selected especially for your needs and carefully placed under the skin. The threads are adapted to elevate your tissues immediate lifting effect. No cut is required.
The non-inserted ends of the threads are cut off and so you can get straight back to your day without any hospital stay, stitches or scars.
For the first few hours after you will feel slightly numb and we would advise that you avoid chewing or drinking hot liquids until your face has regained full sensation.
After
Post treatment care and advice:
- Please do not touch the treated area for 4 hours after the treatment
- Please avoid sleeping on the treated area for 3 nights
- If a bruise does appear, please apply arnica gel a few times a day (this can be purchased from any pharmacy)
- Please do not plan any facial treatment for 4 weeks. You can then plan other facial treatments except for laser treatment
- Avoid strenuous exercise and warming up of your face for 2 weeks
- You will be able to see some good effect as soon as you leave the clinic but it is important to keep in mind that it will take 2 weeks for collagen to start working. You will start to see even better effect after 8 weeks post treatment.
Will I have any swelling or bruising after the treatment?
As with all treatments it is possible to have a degree of swelling and bruising after the treatment. This can last 2-5 days. The majority of clients report little to no down time after treatment, making this a very popular treatment. If you do experience any swelling or bruising you can use an ice pack to reduce any swelling and we will also provide you with soothing creams to reduce any bruising. It is important that you do not scrub your face after the treatment and only gently cleansing is advised from the following day. A follow up review consultation is recommended after 1 week. Are the effects immediate and how long do they last?
The PDO threads will gradually bind and then be resorbed by the bodies natural tissues giving a natural, fresh rejuvenated look. It takes 6 months for the threads to fully dissolve. Over that time the stimulation of collagen and elastin will be stimulated creating the lifting effect and adding greater tightness to the skin. The results will last for upto 2 years. Depending on which areas of the face are treated, you may benefit from occasional treatment with Botox to relax the muscles that pull the face down that effectively work against the lifting effect of the threads.
